Your Guide To Winning Winter And Staying On Top Of Your Nutrition & Health Goals
May 2024
Let's kick start this blog with an example.
Meet Jill.

Winter rolled in this year and disrupted Jill's morning routine. Instead of jumping out of bed for her morning walk, she succumbed to the temptation of a few more minutes snuggled in bed, hitting the snooze button without a second thought.

Days turned to weeks, and Jill started to not feel herself. When she thought about it, she realised she had been neglecting her health—skipping workouts, forgetting to hydrate, doom-scrolling before bed and settling for those 'whatever goes' meals.
Determined, she committed to change, embracing daily walks rain or shine, a salad-heavy diet, and absolutely no soul foods.

Initially, Jill felt invincible. Her newfound determination fuelled her through the first week.
But then, work piled up, family demands tugged at her attention, and as if that weren't enough, the weather took a turn for the worse. Caught in a whirlwind of stress, Jill found herself slipping back into old patterns, and along came the feelings of failure.
Sound familiar? Welcome to the rollercoaster ride of the "all or nothing" approach—a tale as old as time, especially when the chill of winter starts to set in.

So what can Jill do differently?

Avoiding Jill's pitfalls requires a shift in mindset, and approach.

Early morning walks may not be your best option anymore when it's cold and rainy, so it may be time to switch these for a gym workout, or exercise class.
A salad for lunch and dinner isn't going to cut it, instead opt for warmer meals such as leftovers from the night before, or ready to go freezer meals.
Firstly, realise that a change of season means it's time to revise what you are eating and how you are moving.
Secondly, identify your motivators. What drives you to prioritise your health?
Is it how you feel after a nourishing meal? The mental clarity that comes from regular exercise? Better sleep? Or perhaps the confidence boost from taking care of yourself? Take a moment to listen to your body and pinpoint why this is important to you. When we really understand our ‘why’, we will only have ourselves to answer to when we are eating chips straight from the packet thinking ‘why not’.
Next, prioritise time to reset.

It may have been a few weeks since you did a proper grocery shop, or cooked a healthy meal. This is okay, but success isn't just about willpower, it's about creating an environment that supports your goals. This means setting yourself up for success by surrounding yourself with healthy options, and making the healthy option the easy option.
Take the time to write down your week of meals, research some yummy healthy meals that you are excited to make, meal prep and stock your pantry with nutritious staples. By investing in your environment, you'll not only stay on track with your goals, but you will enjoy it along the way!

Lastly, remember to embrace the power of small, sustainable changes.

Rather than aiming for perfection, focus on progress. Set realistic goals that align with your lifestyle and allow room for flexibility on days you just aren't feeling it.
